Tembea is an indigenous Community Based Development Organization based in Ugunja, Siaya County, Nyanza Province, Kenya. Founded in 2003 as an informal youth group, and later got registered officially with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development on 13th April 2006. Tembea have evolved into a centre of excellence in Community Empowerment, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability.
Tembea was founded on the principles of volunteerism and giving back to the society. Steered by young ambitious, likeminded high-school leavers and university students. By then, we were driven by the desire to provide a platform for young people to participate in development activities. Providing opportunities for career information and development, creating space for social and development discourse, innovation and creativity. This was intended to address social ills, environmental degradation, curb youth idleness and address local youth unemployment. Thus, the founding membership used the Tembea platform to rally the youths and the communities at large to take active role in ameliorating the aforementioned state of affairs.
With a host of skilled personnel, sound leadership and governance structures, Tembea have trained a community of field animators that work in solidarity with the beneficiaries of our programs at the grassroots levels.
